What this converter does

This converter changes an elastic (Young’s) modulus from gigapascals to ksi and back. Young’s modulus is a stress — force per area — so it uses the same exact factors as any pressure. Type a value, pick your units, and read the result instantly.

Structural steel has a modulus near 200 GPa, which is about 29,000 ksi. Because the factors are exact, results are precise, not rounded approximations.

02

The units it covers

Elastic (Young’s) modulus is a stress, so it converts on the same fixed pressure factors.

The formula

Each modulus unit has a fixed value in gigapascals, so the conversion is one multiplication:

Conversion
result = value × factor_from ÷ factor_to

Where:

  • value = the modulus you typed
  • factor_from = its value in GPa
  • factor_to = the target unit’s value in GPa

Worked example

Convert steel’s modulus of 200 GPa to ksi.

Step 1 · The factor
1 ksi = 0.00689476 GPa
Step 2 · Divide
200 ÷ 0.00689476 = 29,008 ksi

So 200 GPa ≈ 29,000 ksi — the familiar value for structural steel.

The units in this example

Gigapascalsymbol: GPa

The SI unit for elastic modulus. Steel is about 200 GPa, aluminium 69 GPa and concrete near 30 GPa.

Common modulus conversions
  • 1 GPa = 1,000 MPa
  • 1 GPa ≈ 145.0 ksi
  • 200 GPa ≈ 29,008 ksi
  • 1 GPa = 1,000 N/mm²
Kilopound per square inchsymbol: ksi

The US customary modulus unit. Steel is quoted as 29,000 ksi in American design codes.

Common modulus conversions
  • 1 ksi ≈ 0.006895 GPa
  • 29,000 ksi ≈ 200 GPa
  • 1 Msi = 1,000 ksi
  • 1 ksi ≈ 6.895 MPa

FAQ

QWhat is steel’s Young’s modulus?
About 200 GPa, or 29,000 ksi — the standard elastic modulus for structural steel design.
QIs modulus the same as strength?
No. Modulus measures stiffness; strength is the stress at failure. They share units but differ in meaning.
