What this converter does

This converter turns gigabits per second into megabits per second and back. It also covers kbps, bps and byte-per-second rates. Because network speeds step by 1,000, one Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps. Type a value and read the result instantly.

Bits (lowercase b) measure link speed; bytes (uppercase B) measure file size, at eight bits each. This tool keeps them distinct, using the IEC decimal convention.

02

The units it covers

Every rate converts through bits per second; decimal steps of 1,000 (not 1,024) apply to network speeds.

The formula

Each unit has a fixed value in bits per second, so any conversion goes through bps once:

Conversion
result = value × factor_from ÷ factor_to

Where:

  • value = the number you typed
  • factor_from = the “from” unit’s value in bps
  • factor_to = the “to” unit’s value in bps

Worked example

Convert 10 Gbps to Mbps.

Step 1 · The factor
1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps
Step 2 · Multiply
10 × 1000 = 10,000 Mbps

So a 10 Gbps link is 10,000 Mbps.

The units in this example

Gigabit per secondsymbol: Gbps

The unit of fibre and data-centre links. One gigabit is a billion bits per second.

Common data-rate conversions
  • 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps
  • 1 Gbps = 125 MB/s
  • 1 Gbps = 1e6 kbps
  • 10 Gbps = 10,000 Mbps
Megabit per secondsymbol: Mbps

The everyday unit of broadband and Wi-Fi speed. One megabit is a million bits per second.

Common data-rate conversions
  • 1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps
  • 1 Mbps = 0.001 Gbps
  • 1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s
  • 1,000 Mbps = 1 Gbps

FAQ

QHow many Mbps is 1 Gbps?
Exactly 1,000 Mbps. Network data rates use decimal (1,000-based) steps, not binary.
QIs Gbps faster than Mbps?
Yes, a thousand times. One gigabit per second equals 1,000 megabits per second.
