What this converter does
This converter turns megapascals into ksi and back instantly. It also handles psi, N/mm², kg/cm² and GPa — every pair uses an exact fixed factor, so stress values convert precisely. Type a value, pick your units, and read the result as you type.
One ksi is 1,000 psi, which equals 6.8948 MPa. Steel grades are given in ksi in the US and MPa elsewhere. For force rather than stress, see the kN to kip converter.
The units it covers
Every unit here measures stress or pressure, converting through the megapascal with a fixed ratio.
View all units & their values
| Unit | Symbol | Value | Mainly used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Megapascal | MPa | 1 | SI stress (= N/mm²) |
| Newton per mm² | N/mm² | 1 | Identical to MPa |
| Pound per in² | psi | 0.006895 | US stress, small |
| Kilopound per in² | ksi | 6.8948 | US structural stress |
| kgf per cm² | kg/cm² | 0.09807 | Legacy metric stress |
| Gigapascal | GPa | 1000 | Elastic moduli |
The formula
Each unit has a fixed value in megapascals, so any conversion goes through the MPa once:
result = value × factor_from ÷ factor_toWhere:
- value = the number you typed, in the “from” unit
- factor_from = the “from” unit’s value in megapascals
- factor_to = the “to” unit’s value in megapascals
Worked example
Convert 250 MPa (mild steel yield) to ksi.
1 ksi = 6.8948 MPa250 ÷ 6.8948 = 36.26 ksiSo 250 MPa is about 36.3 ksi — close to A36 steel’s 36 ksi yield.
The units in this example
The SI unit of stress, equal to one newton per square millimetre — the standard for steel and concrete strength outside the US.
- 1 MPa = 1 N/mm²
- 1 MPa ≈ 145.0 psi
- 1 MPa ≈ 0.145 ksi
- 1 GPa = 1,000 MPa
A US unit of stress equal to 1,000 psi, used for steel yield and tensile strength in imperial design.
- 1 ksi = 1,000 psi
- 1 ksi ≈ 6.895 MPa
- 36 ksi ≈ 248 MPa (A36)
- 1 ksi ≈ 70.31 kg/cm²
